Hot Tip No 1 – Elements:

The most effective artwork has three key elements:

  • Large logo
  • Great picture or photo
  • Memorable short copy

Hot Tip No 2 – Fonts:

  • Stick with bold, clear fonts that are easy to read
  • Avoid ALL CAPITAL LETTERS on longer copy
  • Keep letter spacing balanced, not too close, not too far apart
  • Bigger is better – as big as you can without cluttering
  • Hold you artwork at varying distances to check visibility or check out our Artwork Tester
  • Real size of text should be a minimum of 30cm high
  • Remember: the further away it can be read, the longer the viewer has to read it!

Hot Tip No 3 – Colours:

  • Choose complementary colours that have strong contrast
  • Avoid colours that "vibrate" or similar tones that can merge
  • Best combination: black text on yellow background
  • Worst combination: yellow writing on red background

Dummies' Guide to Art that Works

Colour Visibility

The colour combinations below show readability at a distance.
No 1 is the most legible, decreasing in legibility to No 18.
Complementary colours such as red and green are not easy to read.
Any combinations of similar value will have low visibility.
Complementary colours that have a strong contrast in value, and therefore little vibration, provide maximum visibility.
